Online learning expands educational opportunities and provides equal opportunities for all learners.
Nationally, the number of K-12 students taking online courses rose to more than a million public school students during the 2007-08 school year, a 47 percent increase from the previous year. *
The Illinois Virtual School (IVS) provides online courses taught by Illinois certified, highly qualified teachers. IVS works with public, private, and home schools in an effort to provide equal access to high quality, ILS-aligned courses for students in grades 5-12.
IVS is also currently developing professional development opportunities for Illinois educators. Hosting rigorous ILS-aligned content for blended learning opportunities for students (i.e., a combination of face to face instruction and virtual learning instruction) is a goal of the IVS. At the national level, blended learning is essential to revitalizing education and preparing students for work in a global economy.
